Effective July 1, 2026, all subcontractors, trade partners, and visitors on CCSC-member construction sites across Canada must wear Type 2 hard hats with integrated, manufacturer-approved four-point chin straps, properly adjusted and fastened. Helmets must be CSA or ANSI-certified, with the Class matched to electrical hazards on site.
Why Type 2
Type 1 hard hats protect the top of the head only. Type 2 helmets protect against impacts to the front, back, sides, and top, and the integrated chin strap keeps the helmet on during a fall or slip — which is when it matters most. Research from the Helmet Lab at Virginia Tech found that Type 2 helmets reduce the average risk of fall-related concussions by 34% and skull fractures by 65%.
CSA vs. ANSI: What's Required Where
The CCSC mandate accepts either CSA or ANSI-certified Type 2 helmets on member sites. However, provincial OHS law governs what's legally acceptable on any job site, and most provinces require CSA Z94.1 — not ANSI — as the baseline standard.
British Columbia is currently the only province where ANSI is explicitly placed on equal footing with CSA under OHS regulations (WorkSafeBC, Section 11.5(c)). All other provinces and territories — including Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and the rest — require CSA Z94.1 certification under their respective OHS codes.
If your crew works across multiple provinces, or if you want zero compliance uncertainty, a dual-certified CSA + ANSI helmet is the straightforward choice.
What We Carry
We stock two Type 2 helmet lines at coastropes.ca/collections/type-2-helmets.
Studson SHK-1 Full Brim — CSA Z94.1-2015 (R2024) Type II + ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type II
The only dual-certified helmets in our lineup. Valid on CCSC sites and under provincial OHS law in every Canadian jurisdiction. Features Koroyd® impact-absorbing liner, Twiceme® NFC chip for first-responder emergency access, and a four-point Fidlock® magnetic chin strap operable with gloves. Full brim adds sun and rain protection for outdoor work.
- SHK-1 Full Brim Vented — from $210 CAD | Class C
- SHK-1 Full Brim Non-Vented — from $210 CAD | Class E
Class C models provide no electrical insulation. Class E models protect against electrical hazards up to 20,000V.
Studson SHK-1 Standard Brim — ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type II
Same Koroyd®, Twiceme®, and Fidlock® technology as the Full Brim in a lower-profile form factor. ANSI Type II certified — not CSA Z94.1. Compliant with the CCSC mandate; verify provincial OHS requirements before deploying outside BC.
- SHK-1 Vented — from $180 CAD | Class C
- SHK-1 Non-Vented — from $180 CAD | Class E
Kask Zenith X2 Series — ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 Type II + EN 12492
Class E electrical protection (up to 20,000V), washable eco-leather four-point chin strap, and Kask's UP & Down 2.0 fit system. At 430g, one of the lighter options in this class. ANSI Type II and EN 12492 certified — not CSA Z94.1. Compliant with the CCSC mandate; same provincial OHS considerations as the standard brim SHK-1. Well suited for BC operations, rope access work where EN 12492 is required, or fleets already operating under ANSI-accepted standards.
- Zenith X2 — Non-vented, Class E | from $219.95 CAD
- Zenith X2 AIR — Vented, Class C | from $219.95 CAD
- Zenith X2 MAX — Non-vented, Class E | from $219.95 CAD
- Zenith X2 AIR MAX — Vented, Class C | from $219.95 CAD
- Zenith X2 FR — Flame-resistant shell, Class E | from $299.95 CAD
Before Workers Set Foot On Site
- Confirm the required Class for each site — Class E for live electrical work, Class C or G for general construction.
- For any province outside BC, select a CSA-certified helmet. The SHK-1 Full Brim is the only dual-certified option in our lineup.
- Chin straps must be manufacturer-integrated. Retrofitted straps on existing Type 1 helmets do not meet the CCSC requirement.
- Helmets must be properly fitted and chin straps fastened. Brief all subcontractors and visitors before they arrive on site.
